2012 Workshop Schedule

Join us for as many workshops as you like! No need to pre-register, just show up ready to dance. Workshops are first come, first served, so please arrive a few minutes early to ensure your spot at the smaller studios, which are indicated in our FAQs. All of the daytime workshops are free; there is a one-time $5 entrance fee for the evening events at the Ethical Society.

Creative Dance for Kids

Young children ages 4 to 6 years old will explore the joy of movement with games, role play and stories in this class led by Beverly Holskin of Major Moment Studio

Nia

The Arts Parlor
1170 S Broad Street

Discover the joy of movement through the practice of Nia. A fusion fitness class that combines movement forms from the dance arts, the martial arts, and the healing arts. All fitness levels are welcome to bring their minds, bodies,and spirits to a class that finds joy in moving your body, your way! Led by licensed Nia instructor Suzanne O’Grady.

Kids Ballet

An early introduction to ballet for kids aged 5 to 9 years old, encouraging expression through movement. Led by Beverly Holskin of Major Moment Studio

Adult Modern Dance

The Philadelphia Dance Academy

For the beginner who is interested in Modern and Contemporary dance. Take a class to stretch, get grounded, gain awareness of your core muscles, and learn a small combination. Uses ballet and yoga concepts. Taught by Sara Nye.

Bokwa

The Arts Parlor
1170 S Broad Street

Using letters, numbers, hand signals and American Sign Language, certified Bokwa instructor Denine Kirby will cue participants through a fast-paced mix of kickboxing, South African war dance and Capoeira. Pulsating African, Latin, dance and house rhythms will drive dancers to keep moving through this intense, energizing total body workout.

Beginner Adult Ballet

Find out why ballet is the foundation of so many dance forms in this intro course which will cover basic positions, arm carriage and more. If you don’t have ballet slippers you may dance in socks. Led by former ballet corps dancer Beverly Holskin at Major Moment Studio.

Co-ed Pole Dance Fitness

Philly Premier Pole Dance

Poles aren’t just for strippers. Philly Premier Pole Dance will show you how to use them as a tool to develop strength and flexibility. Bring a yoga mat for ab work if you have one. Please note that this is a different location than the salsa class.

BalletEXTREME

Major Moment Studio

An invigorating, innovative combination of ballet and body conditioning designed to build strength, flexibility and grace. Don’t let the name intimidate you – absolutely no prior dance or ballet experience required. Fitness is the goal, ballet movements are the vehicle. So leave your tutu at home and come ready to push your muscles to the EXTREME.

Cardio Bellydance

Cardio belly dance adds upbeat music and a modern twist to basic moves from the ancient Middle Eastern art form. You won’t have time to worry about technique because you’ll never stop moving in this class. Led by Deborah of Philly Dance Fitness

Salsa

If you love going out and dancing late, salsa is an essential. You have three teachers to guide you in this workshop: MasterJay, Todd and Michelle of MasterJay Moves.

Bellydance

Tone your core as you learn to pop, undulate and shimmy muscles you never even knew you had. Taught by bellydance performer Valerie Rushmere of Studio 1831.

All Ages Hip-Hop

Learn a variety of Hip-Hop routines suitable for all ages and all dance levels. Additionally, get a preview of the National Dance Day Zumba routine.  Adults must accompany children under age 14. Led by Philly Dance Fitness

Dominican Style Bachata

Art in Motion

Learn the fundamentals of bachata, from the basic step to how to properly lead and follow. Instructor Darlin Garcia, a native of the Dominican Republic and World Salsa Champion, will focus on the correct connection, tension and movement so you can take your skills to the social dance floor in no time.

Intermediate Hip-Hop

Get down and funky with this faster-paced workshop, which includes the National Dance Day master class Hip-Hop Dance Day routine. Led by Philly Dance Fitness

Impact Jazz

Major Moment Studio

Let loose your inner Fosse and imagine you’re on a Broadway stage in this high-energy twist on contemporary jazz. Class begins with a warm-up that includes exercises to develop strength, flexibility, isolation control and coordination, followed by breakdowns of moves that you’ll piece together in a non-stop cardio workout. By the end of class, you’ll have built a short choreographed routine. Led by Kathy Silvestri of Philly Dance Fitness

Argentine Tango

Embraced by Tango? For the beginner who is interested in learning the structure and fundamentals of Argentine Tango. Experience your first dance steps of Tango. No partner needed. Complete novices welcome. Everyone will rotate partners. Led by Argen-Tango Dancers, Vittoria Natale & Guillermo Elkouss.

All of the following events are included in a one time $5 admission fee.

Zumba Party

Ditch the workout, join the party! Zumba fuses Latin and international rhythms with easy-to-follow steps into a fitness class that feels more like a dance party than a workout. Led by Deborah Hirsch and Lael Leach from Philly Dance Fitness, Dara Patrusky and Ross Toporski. All ages.

6:30 pm – 7:15 pm

Novice Lindy Hop

The music and the style first developed in the 1920s, but swing kids have kept it alive ever since. Learn the basics with volunteers Jeanne and Graham from Philadelphia Lindy and Blues. No partner required.

Beginner Foxtrot

Take a partner (no need to bring one, you’ll rotate around to dance with everyone at the workshop) to learn the classic Foxtrot with the guidance of Ross Toporski of Socialsport Dance Club in Abington.

Build on the salsa basics you learned earlier in the day and get ready for the evening social dance with teachers from Estilo Dance Studio

Practice the moves you learned throughout the day at this social dance. Take a break in the middle to sit back and see performances from the pros including the Estilo Dancers, Bunni Luv of Philly Premiere Pole Dance and LaB!
