2013 Workshop Schedule

Join us for as many workshops as you like! No need to pre-register, just show up ready to dance. Workshops are first come, first served, so please arrive a few minutes early to ensure your spot at the smaller studios, which are indicated in our FAQs. All of the daytime workshops are free; there is a one-time $5 entrance fee for the evening events at the Ethical Society.

Kids Ballet

Along with traditional ballet technique, class includes fun movement activities inspired by popular children’s music and designed to encourage expression through movement. For children ages 5 to 7. Led by Beverly Holskin of Major Moment Studio and Philly Dance Fitness.

Slow Jam Stretch

Elongate and strengthen your entire body with this invigorating combination of tai chi, yoga, Pilates and dance. Stretch and sweat at the same time. Bring a mat or towel. No need for shoes. Taught by Kathy Silvestri of Philly Dance Fitness.

Fam Jam (7-11 year olds and guardians)

Burn some energy and bring your family closer together in this fun dance “sampler” class for kids ages 7 to 11 and their guardians. No need to know any steps – just follow along as Philly Dance Fitness instructor Angela Wertner takes you through jazz, hip-hop, Latin and even lyrical movements; plus party line dances, relays, freeze dances and other games.

Advanced Beginner Modern Dance

Stretch, get grounded, gain awareness of your core muscles and learn a small combination. This contemporary class also incorporates ballet and yoga concepts. Taught by Sara Nye, Program Manager of The Philadelphia Dance Academy and member of RealLivePeople(in)Motion.

Impact Jazz

Imagine you’re on stage in this high-energy twist on contemporary jazz. Class begins with a warm-up followed by breakdowns of moves that you’ll string together in a non-stop cardio workout. Led by Kathy Silvestri of Philly Dance Fitness.

Salsa

If you love going out and dancing late, salsa is an essential. Learn the basic step, cross-body lead and more in this intro course led by instructors at MasterJay Moves.

Modern Dance Fitness

Release your creativity as you spin, spiral and sweat. This liberating workout ups the pace on a traditional lyrical class, drawing on concepts from jazz, ballet and, of course, master modern dance technicians. Philly Dance Fitness instructor Angela Wertner will lead you through a cardio warm-up, fast-paced progressions across the floor, a short combination and conditioning drills.

SwingFit

Add a twist – and some swivels and triple steps — to your workout routine with this cardio fitness spin on classic swing dance. Get your feet and heart hoppin’ with a series of jive, swing, Charleston and lindy drills, then practice your new skills with longer combinations or even a partner, time permitting. Led by Veronica Hudacek of Philly Dance Fitness.

Striptease Aerobics (Frisky Friday on Saturday)

Grab your girlfriends and leave your inhibitions at home for this racy striptease aerobics class. Warm-up with isolations and follow-the-leader routines to get the heart pumping, then piece together a series of sexy moves to build a hotter-than-hot combination. Ladies only, ages 18 and up. With Urban Striptease instructor Deborah Hirsch of Philly Dance Fitness.

Poles aren’t just for strippers. Philly Premier Pole Dance instructors will show you how to use them as a tool to develop strength and flexibility. Bring a yoga mat for ab work if you have one.

Tone your core as you learn to pop, undulate and shimmy muscles you never even knew you had. Taught by bellydance performer Valerie Rushmere of Studio 1831.

Burlesque Fitness

Liberate your inner vixen with a burlesque-inspired workout that will get every muscle burning! Set to traditional burlesque music as well as current dance music, this sensual class promises to increase core strength, coordination and confidence, and create a strong, sexy physique. Taught by Valerie Rushmere of Studio 1831.

All Ages Hip-Hop

Learn a variety of hip-hop routines suitable for all ages and all dance levels. Adults must accompany children under age 14. Led by Maya Sethuraman & Lael Leach from Philly Dance Fitness

JazzTech

From box steps to jazz walks, showcase your style as you build a foundation of traditional jazz movements. This class is designed for adults who want to learn technique, but just for the fun of it. Led by Beverly Holskin of Major Moment Studio and Philly Dance Fitness. Shoes with a smooth surface for turning such as jazz shoes or dance sneakers are ideal, but socks work, too.

Cardio Pop

Amp up your heart rate as you jam to top hits with Besiana Konomi of Philly Dance Fitness. Some routines will be pure cardio, others focus on strengthening and sculpting. Expect squats, lunges, standing abs, arm exercises and lots of energy!

African Dance

Feel the exuberance of African rhythms as you piece together traditional movements in this high-impact class led by Duane Wilkins of Messiah Dance Works. Be prepared to sweat because you will be jumping, flexing and extending the entire time.

An invigorating, innovative combination of ballet and body conditioning designed to build strength, flexibility and grace. Don’t let the name intimidate you – absolutely no prior dance or ballet experience required. Fitness is the goal, ballet movements are the vehicle. Hip-Hop Masterclass

Argentine Tango

Explore the basic concepts behind tango structure, movement and musicality. Sarah Chung leads this challenging and inspiring introduction to Argentine Tango. No partner or prior experience required.

Bachata

Learn the basic step as well as how to properly lead and follow this sensual Latin dance. Instructor Darlin Garcia, a native of the Dominican Republic and World Salsa Champion, will focus on the correct connection, tension and movement so you can take your skills to the social dance floor in no time.

SH’BAM™

SH’BAM™ is the perfect way to shape up and let out your inner star – even if you’re dance challenged. Set to a soundtrack of chart-topping popular hits, dance music that is heard in the hottest nightclubs around the world, familiar classics remixed and modernized Latin beats, SH’BAM™ is the ultimate fun and sociable way to exercise. Led by Jacqui S of the YMCA.

All of the following events are included in a one time $5 admission fee.

Zumba Party

Ditch the workout, join the party! Zumba fuses Latin and international rhythms with easy-to-follow steps into a fitness class that feels more like a dance party than a workout. Led by Lehla Olson, Veronica Hudacek, Besiana Konomi and Lael Leach from Philly Dance Fitness. All ages.

5:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Beginner West Coast Swing

The Ethical Society

1906 Rittenhouse Square

Get a crash course in this ever-evolving, improvisational partner dance with Bonnie Cannon Subey, who teaches for Ballroom Bliss and independently. Because West Coast Swing can be done in six or eight counts, the basics work with a wide range of music, making it a popular — and very useful — club dance.

Intermediate West Coast Swing

Build on your West Coast Swing basics with additional moves and styling tips. Instructor Marty Feltz of Dance Time of New Jersey will also devote extra attention to partner connection to help you become comfortable jumping onto the social dance floor.

The music and the style first developed in the 1920s, but swing kids have kept it alive ever since. Learn the basics with volunteers from Philadelphia Lindy and Blues. No partner required.

Show off your elegant side as you learn to waltz with the guidance of Ross Toporski of Socialsport Dance Club in Abington. No need to bring a partner, you’ll rotate around to dance with everyone at the workshop.
