2014 Workshop Schedule

Join us for as many workshops as you like! No need to pre-register, just show up ready to dance.

Daytime workshops are free and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please arrive a few minutes early to ensure your spot. A few of our smallest studios offer a limited number of guaranteed entry spots for a $2 donation. Even for these classes, the majority of the spots are available for free walk-ins. There is a one-time $5 entrance fee for the evening events at the Ethical Society. NIA Discover the joy of movement through the practice of Nia. A fusion fitness class that combines movement forms from the dance arts, the martial arts, and the healing arts. All fitness levels are welcome to bring their minds, bodies,and spirits to a class that finds joy in moving your body, your way. Led by licensed Nia instructor Rebecca Narva

Power Jam Stretch Elongate and strengthen your entire body with this invigorating combination of tai chi, yoga, Pilates and dance. Stretch and sweat at the same time. Bring a mat or towel. No need for shoes. Taught by Kathy Silvestri of Philly Dance Fitness.

Impact Jazz Imagine you’re on stage in this high-energy twist on contemporary jazz. Class begins with a warm-up followed by breakdowns of moves that you’ll string together in a non-stop cardio workout. Led by Kathy Silvestri of Philly Dance Fitness.

Indonesian Dance An introduction to the dynamic, expressive and exquisite dance of Bali, Indonesia, taught by Sinta Penyami Hite of Modero Dance Company. Using accessible exercises, you will learn the fundamental movement vocabulary and basic techniques of male and female Balinese dance. Develop strength, grace and flexibility through this ancient art form that engages the body, focuses the mind and enlivens the spirit.

Fierce Funk Hip Hop Put a little extra FUNk into your day with this energizing progressive choreography program that anyone can do. The movements combine street style funk with contemporary hip-hop for an accessible, inspiring, fun and complete workout. Taught by Maya Sethuraman of Philly Dance Fitness.

2:45 p.m.

Striptease Leave your inhibitions at home for this racy striptease aerobics class. Warm-up with isolations and follow-the-leader routines to get the heart pumping, then piece together a series of sexy moves to build a hotter-than-hot combination. Ages 18 and up. With burlesque performer Timaree Schmit of Philly Dance Fitness.

Dance Party Boot Camp  Groove while you step up your fitness routine using the proven method of High-Intensity Interval Training. This class incorporates explosive, athletic exercises into dance routines set to your favorite radio hits. With Timaree Shmit and Lael Leach of Philly Dance Fitness.

Tap Tonic Purchase Tickets Stomp, shuffle and spin into shape in this tap fitness program. The steps are basic enough for any beginner, yet fast enough to challenge even those with tap experience. Tap shoes are not necessary, but wear them if you have them! With Angela Wertner of Philly Dance Fitness.

Modern Fitness Purchase Tickets Release your creativity as you spin, spiral and sweat. This liberating workout ups the pace on a traditional lyrical class, drawing on concepts from jazz, ballet and, of course, master modern dance technicians. Philly Dance Fitness instructor Angela Wertner will lead you through a cardio warm-up, fast-paced progressions across the floor, a short combination and conditioning drills.

Piloxing Purchase Tickets Get the toning and aerobic conditioning of boxing, the muscle sculpting of Pilates and the fun of dance in this cardio class. Piloxing is typically performed barefoot but participants are also welcome to wear shoes or socks with treads. With Deb Hirsch of Philly Dance Fitness.

JazzTech Purchase Tickets From box steps to jazz walks, showcase your style as you build a foundation of traditional jazz movements. This class is designed for adults who want to learn technique, but just for the fun of it. Led by Beverly Holskin of Major Moment Studio and Philly Dance Fitness. Shoes with a smooth surface for turning such as jazz shoes or dance sneakers are ideal, but socks work, too.

BalletEXTREME Purchase Tickets An invigorating, innovative combination of ballet and body conditioning designed to build strength, flexibility and grace. Don’t let the name intimidate you – absolutely no prior dance or ballet experience required. Fitness is the goal, ballet movements are the vehicle. Bhangra Blast Purchase Tickets Take a traditional North Indian folk dance, add modern hip-hop moves, a little Bollywood flavor and high-octane music and you get one seriously fun, off-the-chain cardio workout. Tango Purchase Tickets Explore the basic concepts behind tango structure, movement and musicality. Sarah Chung leads this challenging and inspiring introduction to Argentine Tango. No partner or prior experience required.

Advanced Hip Hop Explore rhythm, coordination and style in this upbeat hip hop class. Learn choreography similar to the styles performed by Jason Derulo, Chris Brown and Beyonce!

Intermediate Tap Turn your feet into a percussion instrument while you learn intricate footwork in this hoofing style class. By the end, you'll have pieced a repertoire of steps into a basic choreography. Please bring tap shoes.

Advanced Jazz Turn, leap, jump and run in this fast-paced class. After stretching exercises and passes across the floor, you'll learn choreography filled with attitude and personal style.

Cardio Bellydance (2nd floor) A fun uptempo workout that blends bellydance moves from the Middle East and North Africa with uniquely American flair. Get a feisty, sensual whole body workout while strengthening your core in all dimensions. With Sherrilyn Billger of Philly Dance Fitness.

7 p.m.
Zumba Party* (first floor) Ditch the workout, join the party! Zumba fuses Latin and international rhythms with easy-to-follow steps into a fitness class that feels more like a dance party than a workout. Led by instructors from Philly Dance Fitness. All ages.

7:15 p.m.
Lindy Hop (second floor) The music and the style first developed in the 1920s, but swing kids have kept it alive ever since. Learn the basics with volunteers from Philadelphia Lindy and Blues. 
7:30 p.m. to
8:15 p.m.
Blues (second floor) Learn how to partner dance to sultry, soulful blues songs with volunteers from Philadelphia Lindy and Blues.
7:15 p.m. to
8 p.m.
Rumba (first floor) While rumba requires slow, sexy styling, the basic patterns can be applied to many popular songs, making it one of the most useful partner dancers. With Ballroom Bliss.
8:15 p.m. to
9 p.m.
Salsa (first floor) If you love going out and dancing late, salsa is an essential. Learn the basic step, cross-body lead and more in this intro course. Led by Ross Toporski, assisted by Chuck Havranak, Beverly Holskin and Deborah Hirsch. Note: For all of the above social dancing workshops, no need to bring a partner because you’ll rotate around to practice with everyone.
