2016 Workshop Schedule

Join us for as many workshops as you like! No need to pre-register, just show up ready to dance.

Daytime workshops are free and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please arrive a few minutes early to ensure your spot. A few of our smallest studios may offer a limited number of guaranteed entry spots for a $2 donation. Even for these classes, the majority of the spots are available for free walk-ins. There is a one-time $5 entrance fee for the evening events at the Ethical Society. Hip-Hop Inspired by street dance styles, this class emphasizes isolations, stretching, rhythms and funky footwork.

Tap Technique Turn your feet into a percussion instrument while you learn intricate footwork in this hoofing style class. By the end, you'll have pieced a repertoire of steps into a basic choreography. Please bring tap shoes.

Zumba Join Ingrid of the Christian Street Y for this fusion of high-energy cardio dance and targeted body sculpting. Using Zumba® toning sticks or 1-3 pound dumbbells, you’ll work every muscle group while you groove. Weights will be provided, but you can bring your own if you prefer.

Sh'Bam & Body Jam Mashup* Enjoy the sensation of dance in this blend of two Les Mills cardio programs. An addictive fusion of the latest dance styles and hottest new sounds puts the emphasis as much on having fun as on breaking a sweat. Instructor Jacqui S from the Christian Street YMCA and special guest Allyson Kacmarski will teach you to move with attitude, so grab a friend, get front and center, and get high on the feeling of dance.

BollyX Rock out in this fitness class inspired by the music and dance of Bollywood, the film industry of India. Experience authentic and exhilarating choreography with upbeat music from around the world that will have you smiling and sweating at the same time. The easy-to-follow format cycles between higher and lower intensity dance sequences to give you an effective cardio interval workout. Taught by Deeksha Seth.

Bhangra/Bollywood Blast Learn some basic steps and techniques central to this upbeat North Indian folk dance style. Taught by Deborah Hirsch of Philly Dance Fitness.

Power Stretch & Sculpt Elongate and strengthen your entire body with this invigorating combination of yoga, Pilates and dance. Stretch and sweat at the same time. Bring a mat or towel. No need for shoes. Taught by Emily Tara Sabalbaro and Asha Brightwell of Philly Dance Fitness.

Jazz Cardio Fusion Turn, leap, jump and run in this fun-filled, high-energy twist on contemporary jazz. Class begins with a warm-up followed by breakdowns of moves that you’ll later string together in a nonstop cardio workout. Taught by Kayla Babicki of Philly Dance Fitness.

Contemporary Dance Fitness Release your creativity as you spin, spiral and sweat. This liberating workout ups the pace on a traditional lyrical class, drawing on concepts from jazz, ballet and, of course, master modern dance technicians. Philly Dance Fitness instructor Kayla Babicki will lead you through a cardio warm-up, fast-paced progressions across the floor\ and a short combination.

Dance Party Boot Camp Groove while you step up your fitness routine using the proven method of High-Intensity Interval Training. This class incorporates explosive, athletic exercises into dance routines. With Timaree Schmit of Philly Dance Fitness.

Striptease Leave your inhibitions at home for this racy striptease aerobics class. Warm-up with isolations and follow-the-leader routines to get the heart pumping, then piece together a series of sexy moves to build a hotter-than-hot combination. Ages 18 and up. American Tribal Style® Bellydance Experience this classical improvisational tribal bellydance program developed by FatChanceBellyDance®. Paula Phillips, who directs State Street Tribal, Philadelphia's own FatChanceBellyDance® "sister studio," will teach "level 1" steps as well as group formations and improvisational cuing.

ZoomDance for Kids Ages 2-8 Reserve tickets This high-energy action adventure storytelling movement class will have kids leaping, scooting, swooshing, balancing and sneaking through the room. We'll read a story and act it out with games, dances, characters, imagination and lots of surprises. Led by ZoomDance instructors.

POUND Fitness Reserve tickets Unleash your rock-band dreams in this addictive fusion of movement and drumming. This full-body cardio jam session combines light resistance with constant simulated drumming. Expect a mix of cardio, Pilates, isometric poses and plyometrics. Bring a mat if you have one. We'll provide Ripstix to use during class and “Pound Pro” Lehla Olson will show you exactly how to use them.

African Dance Revolution Reserve tickets Get ready for kicks, jumps, spins and high energy torso movements as you explore the dance styles of Africa and the Caribbean in this easy-to-follow program led by certified ADR instructor Lehla Olson. Expect a musical blend of African rumba, tropical, Jamaican, traditional African rhythms and hip-hop, all paired with simple steps. Every muscle in your body will get a workout during this heart-pumping cardio class.

FierceFUNk Hip-Hop Reserve tickets Put a little extra FUNk into your day with this energizing progressive choreography program that anyone can do. The movements combine street style funk with contemporary hip-hop for an accessible, inspiring, fun and complete workout. Taught by Maya Sethuraman of Philly Dance Fitness.

JazzTech Reserve tickets From box steps to jazz walks, showcase your style as you build a foundation of traditional jazz movements. This class is designed for adults who want to learn technique, but just for the fun of it. Led by Beverly Holskin of Major Moment Studio and Philly Dance Fitness. Shoes with a smooth surface for turning such as jazz shoes or dance sneakers are ideal, but socks work, too.

BalletEXTREME Reserve tickets An invigorating, innovative combination of ballet and body conditioning designed to build strength, flexibility and grace. Ballet & Bounce for Kids Ages 2-3.5 Boys and girls will skip, jump and twirl with the help of an experienced NEST dance instructor. Little dancers will benefit from increased flexibility, coordination and strength, specific techniques for ballet, improved balance, posture and grace, development of rhythm and creative movement. Tutus provided.

Tiny Dancers for Kids Ages 3-6 In this next level class, children cover fundamentals of ballet technique as well as jazz and Broadway-style musical theatre movement. "Tiny Dancers" will run through a proper warm-up, stretches, across-the-floor progressions and even a few combinations. Dancers will let their imaginations run wild as they get the opportunity to play different characters and tell a story through dance. For this and the above workshop, please check in at the front desk at least 10 minutes early. Dance attire is welcome but not required. Guardians must be present. All enrollees also get free access to the NEST play space from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Beginner Tap Technique (second floor) Whether you’re newer to tap or you haven't dusted off your tap shoes for years, here's your chance to brush up on basic tap sounds, terminology, timing and rhythm. Instructor Sherrilyn Billger of Philly Dance Fitness will break down the steps, then lead a series of exercises and combinations to help you perfect each sound. No prior tap experience required, tap shoes recommended.

Tap Tonic (second floor) Stomp, shuffle and spin into shape in this tap fitness program. The steps are basic enough for any beginner, yet fast enough to challenge even those with tap experience. Tap shoes are not necessary, but wear them if you have them! With Sherrilyn Billger of Philly Dance Fitness.

Zumba & Cardio Pop Dance Party* (first floor) Amp up your heart rate in this high-energy dance party featuring easy-to-follow Cardio Pop and Zumba routines! Expect a fusion of Latin and international rhythms along with Top 40 hits past and present. Bonus points if you sing along as you sweat. No need to remember steps — just follow along. Led by a team of instructors, including Dyann Paolino, Michael D'Ulisse, Michelle Krichilsky and Vonda Pearson. All ages.

Beginner Salsa (second floor) If you love going out and dancing late, salsa is an essential. Learn the basic step, cross-body lead and more in this intro course led by Mike Andino of Estilo.

6:40 p.m.
National Dance Day Hip-Hop Master Class* (first floor) Warm up with easy-to-follow cardio pop and hip-hop routines, then learn the official National Dance Day routine followed by another progressive choreography. Open to all ages. Adults must accompany children under age 14. Taught by Maya Sethuraman and Michelle Krichilsky of Philly Dance Fitness.

6:30 p.m.
Israeli Dancing 101 (second floor) If you've only done a hora before or maybe never even heard that term, come explore the diversity of modern Israeli dancing at this intro workshop led by Don Schillinger of Rak-Dan Entertainment. Learn a few classics as well as newer circle and line dances in this low-impact session.
6:30 p.m. to
7:00 p.m.
Israeli Partner Dancing (second floor) Unlike ballroom dancing, Israeli folk dances for partners have a specific set of steps that correspond to each song. Learn a couple of new and popular routines with Don Schillinger, a longtime IFD instructor in the area.
6:45 p.m. to
7:30 p.m.
Intro to Ballroom Dancing (first floor) If you've never done partner or ballroom dancing before, this is the perfect place to start. Learn a mix of international Latin and Standard basics while focusing on lead and follow principles. Taught by Dusan and Ana Ramljak, who have more than 20 years experience teaching dance and competing in International Latin, Ballroom and Show Dance competitions.
7:15 p.m. to
8 p.m.
East Coast Swing (second floor) Cover the basics of six-count swing plus spins and several other steps in this beginner-friendly session. This upbeat style fits well with Motown, jazz and many pop songs, making it an extremely useful tool for dancing at wedding receptions or other social functions. No need to bring a partner, you'll rotate during class. Taught by Ben Long and Gretchen Metzenberg.
7:45 p.m. to
8:30 p.m.
Bachata (first floor) Learn the basics of this sensual Latin dance, then layer in a few spins and you'll be ready to take your skills to the social dance floor in no time. Taught by Deborah Hirsch of Ballroom Bliss.
8:30 p.m. to
11:30 p.m.
Social dance, performances and prizes (first floor) Practice what you've learned and watch a performance showcase featuring instructors and students from participating dance studios. The performance will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. and run for about 45 minutes.

Note: For all of the above social dancing workshops, no need to bring a partner because you’ll rotate around to practice with everyone.

*Suitable for all ages. Dancers under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
