Live Performances at Dance Day 2018

After long day filled with dancing on July 28, you’ll be glad for a few opportunities to rest and admire some of our phenomenal local dance talent!

First up, head to the Gershman Y, 401 S. Broad Street, at noon for a FREE half-hour lunchtime show featuring South Indian Classical Dance, lyrical, hip-hop and more. Bring your lunch and meet fellow dance enthusiasts at this informal midday break.

After more participatory workshops throughout the afternoon, we’ll top off the night with our hallmark evening showcase, which includes performances by an eclectic mix of student groups, instructors and professional dancers.

This variety show started as a kind of interlude to highlight our volunteer instructors. However, interest from student groups and other performers has grown steadily over the years, turning this showcase into a true capstone of our amazing community event. Expect a full 2-hour show this summer, featuring everything from belly dance to ballet.

Expect to see:

  • Jazz by Philly Dance Fitness students under the direction of Beverly Holskin
  • Egyptian Belly Dance by Roberto Mejia
  • Bollywood by Philly Dance Fitness students under the direction of Antima Marandola
  • Semi-classical Bollywood by Teena Varghese
  • Contemporary under the direction of Natalie Flynn
  • Pointe Barre by Philly Dance Fitness students under the direction of Beverly Holskin
  • Contemporary Ballet by Danielle Bourgeon & Kayla Babicki
  • Hip-Hop by Philly Dance Fitness students under the direction of Ricky Evans & Jody Thigpen
  • Jazz by Philly Dance Fitness students under the direction of Lee-Ann Doncevic
  • Advanced Pointe by Philly Dance Fitness students under the direction of Beverly Holskin
  • Structured Improvisation by Sean Thomas Boyt
  • Contemporary by Philly Dance Fitness students under the direction of Kayla Babicki
  • Contemporary by Nia Andrews
  • Tap by The Philadelphia Community Tap Project under the direction of Pamela Hetherington
  • And more!

See what’s in store by checking out these videos from last year’s performances.

The showcase will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. at the Y.

Please note that while the daytime Dance Day workshops remain free, there is a $10 requested donation starting at 5 p.m. for entry to the evening events and showcase, which includes post-show refreshments. These funds help defray the costs of this nonprofit event. Save yourself time at the door by purchasing your evening event tickets here. See you soon!

Two FREE Dance Day 2018 Preview Events!

What could be better than a massive, citywide day filled with free dance workshops?

How about even more free dance events to celebrate the upcoming 9th annual Dance Day?

Since we can’t contain our excitement about Philadelphia Dance Day, we’re starting the party early with a line up of totally FREE classes at Sound Space studio in Fairmount on Saturday, July 14. From tap to jazz, we’ll be making some noise as we get down. Find the full schedule and RSVP here.

Then, the week of Dance Day, head to Eakins Oval at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25 for a free outdoor Cardio Dance Mashup.  The hour-long program will include a mix of Cardio Pop, Zumba and line dances led by a fabulous team of volunteer instructors. UPDATE July 25: Due to forecasted rain and thunderstorms, we’re moving this jam session indoors to the lovely Sound Space studio (2511 W. Girard Ave.), which isn’t far from the OVAL.

As with the daytime workshops on Philadelphia Dance Day, there is absolutely no charge to join in either of these sneak-preview events (though you may wish to bring some money to the OVAL if you plan to purchase anything from the food trucks stationed there). Just show up ready to dance!

Also like Dance Day, these preview events are entirely volunteer run. So please help us spread the word by sharing links on social media and inviting your friends! While you’re at it, don’t forget to share the Facebook event for Dance Day itself!

We held our first Oval preview four years ago and always have a blast even if it’s sizzling hot! Special thanks to Philly Dance Fitness member Moria M., who initially orchestrated this exciting partnership, and to Sound Space owner Pam Hetherington, who has been a sponsor and volunteer instructor at several Dance Days.

Zumba instructors Shannan Reese and Vonda Pearson get the crowd moving at the OVAL Dance Day pre-party in 2017.
